Drawing for Adults: Inkblot

Continue your personal journey through the practice of drawing with a dive deep into one of the richest drafting materials, ink! Our new class, Adult Drawing: Inkblot, is a specific exploration of all that ink can do on paper: drip, stain, stipple, scratch, and stamp. We will use a wide variety of tools, including traditional metal nibs, sumi brushes, and mechanical pens as well as resists and stencils to block and manipulate ink on the page. Learn how to build up ink washes to create depth and a sense of space. Try carefully inking over graphite with delicate spider lines, or working large and direct with thick brushes and broad gestural strokes. This class is perfect for the artist who loves to draw and is ready to experiment and push outside of their comfort zone. Taught by our Visual Art Director Jason Watson. Mosaics for Adults: Repurpose/Reclaim

Mosaics for Adults: Repurpose/Reclaim

Join renowned Charlotte artist Tom Thoune as he introduces the basics of one of his favorite art media, mosaics! Learn how to safely fashion these complex, textured surfaces in a variety of materials, including ceramic, glass, and found objects. Tom will introduce tips and techniques for building lush mosaic surfaces, and help you develop your own approach to color, composition, and image. This class will specifically address how to rethink old household ceramic pieces (plates, cups, or other tableware) into something new and unique; how to transform the broken into the beautiful.

Tom Thoune works as a ceramic artist and sculptor as well as in painting, drawing, and larger installations. His permanent mosaic projects can be found around Charlotte and in numerous area museums and galleries. Check out Tom’s website at https://www.tomthoune.com/

Painting for Adults: Industrial Revolution

Following up our regular Painting for Adults session, we are offering an exciting new take on depicting the modern cityscape, Painting: Industrial Revolution! Do you love old warehouses, railyards, and factory facades? Are you drawn to the rich surfaces of crumbling brick and rusted steel? Explore the aesthetics of time in this special workshop that looks at creative ways to depict buildings and urban spaces from the industrial past. We will focus on mimicking weathered surfaces, compositions based on complex patterns and geometries, and looking at other artists who share an interest in the palette of decadent decay. This workshop is taught by renowned Charlotte artist Sharon Dowell, who brings her own unique palette to refurbishing industrial spaces with large murals, public works projects for transit, and architectural paintings that fracture the modern city into a kaleidoscope of intricate design.

Teen Art Studio
Our Teen Art Studio experience is the perfect opportunity for high school students to explore their interest in visual art by learning alongside a working professional artist. Each semester, one of CSA’s artist faculty will share their studio practice with teens, in these casual weekly afternoon sessions that combine learning new skills (in painting, drawing, fibers, mixed media, and sculpture) with informal discussions on contemporary art and design, and developing careers in the arts. Students will engage in a short series of self-guided portfolio projects and sketchbook exercises, and make occasional excursions beyond the studio to explore museums, parks, and other cultural attractions in Uptown Charlotte.
